After several researches and studies, you have finally concluded that your business is ready to go to the next level. You start moving outside of your community and survey possible areas for your business’ new branch. As you move around, you see the perfect spot. But one doubt remains at the back of your head, “How will I introduce my products to these new folks?” You went online and did some research. You came across fliers and brochures. Good. Then you came across a free web hosting site. You thought of taking advantage of it as well, but you don’t know how to start. Take a look at the below tips on how you can begin your journey on building your first professional website.

Start Easy: Take some pictures!

Your pictures will speak well of your business. If you have good pictures, then your business will show as impressive and will convey the right message onto your virtual visitors. If your business has something to do with food, then take pictures of the food you are selling. If your business is more on services like consultancy, then take pictures of your office with people on business attires talking to each other. Imagine scenes that your visitors can identify with. These pictures will represent your business and would paint the picture to your visitor’s eyes.

Think of a great logo.

The logo is the heart of your business. Your business beliefs, values and history shall be carried by your logo. Put this logo somewhere on your website design. Most sites would prefer their logos be on the upper left hand side of the page where it can easily be seen by their visitors. This logo is the image of your business and the perfect logo conveys the right message to the potential customers.

Start creating your website.

If this is the first time you build a website, it is highly recommended for you to start with the basic web page builder. Microsoft Frontpage’s friendly tools and look will make you feel as if you are just creating documents in Word. With the help of this software you can easily design a professional website within a few days. The buttons, the look, the feel and the features are pretty much like the word processors everybody is used to so you won’t really get lost. If ever you do, the ever-reliable function key 1 is always there to be of help. Tutorials and explanations of the program’s functions are available on the same help menu and will get you through building your first professional website.

The first step on your way to a very fast website is object size minimization. What files must be minified? What are the best minimization techniques? How object size minimization will affect your visitors’ experience? Read our Website Performance Guide Step 1 to find the answers to all your questions.

What files should you compress? Well, in fact the right answer is – all the files. First, let’s start with text files. You must remove all the HTML & Javascript comments, line breaks, tabs. If you are going to do it manually, you are crazy – there are lots of automated tools that can do all the cleaning job.

You might have an objection – yes, it’s really painful to edit compressed in such a way files. The easiest and the most effective way is to keep 2 versions of every file, i.e. your local version of your site should be uncompressed, but before publishing it, you compress the files and only then upload to your FTP. Don’t forget to test the uploaded files after you’ve uploaded them – in some cases programs break JavaScript code and this may affect your website’s functionality. There are many tools to compress Javasctipt, CSS and HTML files, I’ll name here only a few:

JSMin

JavaScript::Minifier

Dojo ShrinkSafe aka Rhino

Dean Edwards Packer

YUI Compressor

CSSMin

Minify

YUI

CSS Tidy

CSS Minifier

After you’ve eliminated all unnecessary characters from your text files (usually you win 25-60%), your next steps are:

1. Compress your graphics

2. Enable GZIP compression

3. Use static compression (this will be discussed in my next post).

There are 6 basic strategies to improve your website performance. I am going to name them in this post and describe them more thoroughly in my future materials. Of course, you cannot boost your website performance if you do only one thing. But if you succeed in at least 3 – your site’s visitors will definitely appreciate your effort!

Here are the strategies:

1. Objects size Minimization. Make sure your (X)HTML, CSS and JavaScript files occupy as little space as possible. Trim white spaces, remove line breaks and comments. Of course, you don’t need to do everything manually – there are a lot of free tools available on the Internet. Don’t also forget to minimize the filesize of your JPEG/GIF/PNG images. A part of this strategy is GZIP compression.

2. Objects caching – this is a server-side technique. There are many ways to cache your files, we’ll discuss them later.

3. Objects merging – this is very easy. The HTTP requests you do, the less time it takes to load your page. Therefore – use CSS sprites, merge JavaScript and CSS files into one large files – this makes your pages really faster.

4. Simultaneous objects loading – as you probably know, your browser keep only 2 simultaneous connections to one host open. If you add an additional server to keep your images and other static files, you can win up to 30% boost.

5. CSS and JavaScript objects optimization. It can be a real pain to optimize JavaScript files written by someone else, but the result will be visible, especially if your site grows to 10.000 uniques per day and more.

Someone must stress-test the cloud if we want to take it seriously, as a real IT resource for the real business. On the last week some Australian researchers took up the challenge, and the stress-tests showed that the infrastructure of on-demand services offered by Amazon, Google, and Microsoft suffers from regular performance and availability issues. Researchers have created a web load stress test that simulated 2200 simultaneous user connections to applications hosted on Amazon EC2, Google AppEngine platform and Microsoft Azure Cloud computing.

As always with these types of tests, there is some good news and bad news:

The good news is that the testing did confirm that the cloud computing platform could scale as needed and responded to the dynamic growth of demand load. In fact, when the demand increased, dynamic cloud computing, provided that the additional capacity needed to meet the demand.

The bad news is that performance is very different. Indeed, according to researchers, the response time during the test, differed by 20 times, depending on time of day test occurred.

Testing also showed that various computing platforms clouds were individually suited for certain types of applications. For example, AppEngine to Google, seems to work best in simple applications or tasks that take less than 30 seconds. Google tools for monitoring were more oriented toward the developer and not such a great fit for business users.

The results of testing are encouraging, considering that the great concern about cloud computing is the ability to dynamically scale, which is one of the main reasons to use computing cloud, in the first place. The possibility of increasing conversion on demand, without having to go out and wave to purchase equipment and software upgrades, indeed, why we look at cloud computing.

On the other hand, performance problems are daunting - but not surprising. Anyone who uses a Web-aware that remote sites have huge differences in response times, and in many cases there are any number of links in the chain beyond themselves remote servers, such as network saturation that can cause delays. Nevertheless, the researchers said that they took this into account in its testing methodology.

GZIP techology was introduced in 1992 however even today many sites do not have GZIP enabled. Although it helps to open pages 4-5 times faster than usually, and is 100% supported by modern browsers, many webmasters don’t even know such a thing exists. I won’t describe how great it is to use GZIP on your server, as you can find this information in Wikipedia and/or Google. What I’m going to tell you, is how to configure your Apache 1.3.x server easily.

All the configuration lines are stored in .htaccess file (don’t forget the fullstop in the beginning of the filename). Your .htaccess must be in HTDOCS or public_HTML or WWW folder (i.e. the root of your web site). This is how your .htaccess will look like:

<IfModulemod_gzip.c>
# here we enable GZIP
mod_gzip_on Yes

# here we add Content-Encoding: gzip
AddEncoding gzip .gz

# only files that are larger will be compressed (bytes)
mod_gzip_minimum_file_size 1024

#only files that are smaller will be compressed (bytes)
mod_gzip_maximum_file_size 1024000

# the files that smaller than this value will be compressed in the memory
mod_gzip_maximum_inmem_size 60000

# protocol version
mod_gzip_min_http 1000

# adding default compression for .html
mod_gzip_item_include file \.html$

# JS and CSS files won’t be compressed
mod_gzip_item_exclude file \.js$
mod_gzip_item_exclude file \.css$

# we also want to compress all the other text files
mod_gzip_item_include mime ^text/html$
mod_gzip_item_include mime ^text/plain$
mod_gzip_item_include mime ^httpd/unix-directory$

# but we definitely don’t want to compress images (ever tried to compress JPG files on your pc?)
mod_gzip_item_exclude mime ^image/

# disabling ‘Transfer-encoding: chunked’ for gzip-files
mod_gzip_dechunk Yes

# adding Vary header for correct detection by browsers behind local proxies
mod_gzip_send_vary On
</IfModule>

That’s it. Easy, isn’t it?

Wordpress platform is perfect for everyday blogging, it’s easy to install and use, but only until your posts begin attracting public attention. As soon as your blog becomes popular, it takes more and more time for the pages to load and of course your readers don’t like this. Gradually you start hating all the shiny features that Wordpress usually boasts of.

At this point you become concerned about your blog performance. Good news – there are many things to tune in Wordpress to make it work faster. Today I want to share several tips that will make your blog perform better.

First, let’s talk about Wordpress plugins. The first what you have to do is disable all unused plugins. They consume RAM and CPU and leave less to your visitors. That’s why, disable everything you don’t need.

Next step, we are going to edit the holy of holies of Wordpress, “wp-includes/functions.php”. Open the file in your favorite editor and find this line:

is_blog_installed()

Add this line just below:

return true;

I.e. your function will look as follows:

function is_blog_installed(){

return true;

This allows to avoid checks whether Wordpress is installed or not. Usually these checks are done with every accessed page and you absolutely don’t need them after the blog’s been installed. The line we add says to the blog engine: Hey, this blog is already installed, don’t waste your time on re-checking this.

Now it’s time to optimize your database. Our little helper is WP-Optimize plugin. This is what the plugin does:

It removes unnecessary wordpress post revisions;

Removes all the comments in the spam queue;

Removes all the unapproved comments;

It can rename one username to another username (this feature can be used to rename default “Admin” user to something more secure;

Applies MySQL ‘optimize’ commands on your database tables without phpMyAdmin.

It displays the database statistics. It also shows how much space can be optimized and how much space has been cleared.

You can find out more about the plugin on the plugin page.

The next rule is – never use plugins that do what can easily be integrated into your template. Even super-easy plugins make several database queries, which slow down your server. Therefore don’t complicate your life, think about Wordpress optimization at the same time when you install the blog.

In my next post I’ll tell you how to boost your web site performance, this information will be relevant to Wordpress as well and is recommended as the next step in improving your Wordpress performance.
